Myofunctional Therapy
To speak, breathe, and swallow correctly, the muscles in our face, mouth, and throat must be properly structured so they may coordinate movements effectively.
Orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) are described by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association as “patterns involving oral and orofacial musculature that interfere with the normal growth, development, or function of orofacial structures, or call attention to themselves.”
Examples of Orofacial Myofunctional Disorders:
-
Tongue thrust (placing the tongue between the teeth while swallowing)
-
Mouth breathing (keeping lips apart/mouth open at rest)
-
Jaw malocclusions (such as overbite, underbite, or open bite)
-
Tongue tie
-
Lip tie
-
Habitat Elimination (Thumb/Finger sucking)
Our speech-language pathologists (SLPs) help individuals overcome these disorders by providing specialized therapy. We will assess the specific needs of each patient and design personalized treatment plans to improve orofacial muscle coordination and function. Addressing these issues, with an SLPs skilled guidance, helps improve speech clarity, swallowing ability, and overall oral health.

Accent Modification
Accent modification is a specialized elective service aimed to help individuals modify their speech patterns for improved intelligibility and communication effectiveness. This process involves changing specific elements of speech, such as pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, and stress patterns, to more closely align with the standard or desired accent of that language or region. Accent modification can benefit: non-native English speakers, native English speakers with regional dialects, professionals in a workplace setting, or anyone seeking to improve communication in their mainstream environment.
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) of Taylor’d Speech & Language Services, PLLC, can assist individuals in accent modification using thorough assessments and personalised plans that involve specific trainings and exercises. As we do so, we are determined to be culturally sensitive so that our clients maintain their cultural identity and respects to their native accent or dialect. Our goal is not to eliminate an individual's native accent or dialect but to enhance their ability to be understood and to communicate more effectively in specific contexts and environments, whether it be in the workplace or everyday environments.
